County Parks Honors White River Rescue Founder

Hamilton County Parks and Recreation recently hosted a heartfelt dedication ceremony at the White River Campground to honor the late John Bundy, founder of White River Rescue Inc., for his unwavering commitment to the preservation and restoration of the White River. The event drew members of the community, local officials, and environmental advocates to celebrate John’s enduring legacy. The event took place not only on Earth Day, but also what would have been Bundy’s 76th birthday.
During the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the campground, recognizing Bundy’s decades of advocacy, restoration work, and tireless dedication to protecting the river’s ecosystem. Attendees shared stories and memories, underscoring the deep impact John had on both the White River and the people of Hamilton County.
John Bundy founded White River Rescue Inc. in 2000, shortly after a catastrophic pollution event in 1999 devastated the river’s aquatic life. In response, Bundy launched a mission that would span decades—focusing on river cleanup, fish restocking, and environmental consulting. His efforts were instrumental in reviving the White River, transforming it into a vibrant habitat and a cherished natural space for the community.
In addition to the plaque dedication, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) marked the occasion with a fish stocking, releasing several native fish species back into the river — symbolizing the ongoing commitment to the health and vitality of the White River, a cause John Bundy held close to his heart.
“We are proud to celebrate John Bundy’s incredible legacy,” said Chris Stice, Director of Hamilton County Parks and Recreation. “Through White River Rescue and his own personal efforts, John helped turn a tragedy into a story of hope and renewal. His work continues to inspire, and this plaque ensures his contributions will not be forgotten.”
White River Rescue Inc. also made a generous $52,000 donation to HCPR, which funded the recent refurbishment of the fishing pier at the White River Campground. The improvements have enhanced the pier’s accessibility and appearance, providing a more enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Key members of White River Rescue Inc., including Valarie Bundy, Steve Schwartz, and Lori Schwartz, were in attendance to help commemorate John’s legacy and celebrate the revitalization efforts made possible through his vision and leadership
