Nick Hulen Signs to Play Baseball for DePauw
Nicholas “Nick” Hulen, Hamilton Heights’ senior, signed a letter of intent to play baseball for DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana this fall. DePauw University is a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and a NCAA Division III athletic institution. He is the son of Christopher and Lisa Hulen.
DePauw just made good sense for Hulen to continue his education and play baseball at the college level. “It’s a good academic school which will help me with my future,” said Nicholas Hulen who will join his twin sister, Sophia, who signed to swim at DePauw earlier this year and older brother Nate, a junior and member of the Tigers’ baseball team. Hulen plans to study biochemistry and attend medical school.
Hulen, a multi-sport athlete (football/3 years and basketball/2 years), has been successful in the classroom, on the court, and on the field. A member of the National Honor Society and Student Government Organization, Hulen has earned six varsity letters (2 in football and 4 in baseball), and named to the football Academic All-State Team. For baseball, he was named to the All-Freshmen Team, All-Conference Team, and All Conference Honorable Mention twice.
“I’ve been passionate about this sport since I could walk,” recalled Hulen, who started his baseball career with Tee Ball and working his way to where he is today. “Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time going to Finch Creek and Pro X training for hours and hours.” Hulen also practiced with his dad and brother hitting, pitching, and fielding.
Hulen says it has been his brother Nate’s influence in his development as far back as he can remember. “Attending his games, watching him play, working out and training with him has helped me to develop into the player I am today,” he added.
“Nick loves the game and plays as hard as anyone that I have coached,” said from Adam Hughes, Hamilton Heights Varsity Boys Baseball Coach. “His football background plays a huge part in his competitiveness. I have coached Nick in both sports for 8 seasons. He will be sorely missed and tough to replace.”
“Nick has been a solid student/athlete who has made major contributions in three different sports over the course of his high school career,” added Kurt Ogden, Hamilton Heights Athletic Director. “It has been especially enjoyable to watch his growth and development in the sport of baseball where he has excelled on the mound and as one of the leading hitters in the program. We are excited for Nick to have the opportunity to play baseball with his brother, Nate, and attend the same university as his twin sister, Sophia. What an awesome opportunity for the whole Hulen family.”
