Smile
What makes Kristen Yutzy smile? “Helping people,” said the 33-year-old, a Westfield native and 2008 graduate of Westfield High School. “I love being able to help people and see them smile and see the joy on their faces. That makes me feel good. My kids always (usually) make me smile.” She is a 2012 graduate of Purdue University, where she studied Youth, Adult and Family Services. After college, the former Kristen Weiss joined her parents, Dave and Beck Weiss, at their flower shop, Union Street Flowers & Gifts in downtown Westfield. Her dad used to be the pharmacist in Westfield and Sheridan. When they retired and closed the business, she took a job at Westfield-Washington Township Trustee Office and recently worked on the grant that Hamilton County received for rent and utility assistance. She has been a program assistant since January for Purdue Extension Hamilton County at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Noblesville, where she was found this week in the 4-H Fair Office getting ready for this year’s fair, which opens today and continues through Monday. She’s a 10-year Hamilton County 4-H’er herself and grew up in the Westfield countryside that’s now next door to Grand Park. She has a husband of seven years, Ryan (who was friends with her brother in college), and two kids, Lyle, 3, and Wade, 1. She’s been putting on 4-H Spark Clubs and led a spring break camp, a cupcake challenge and other programs and is helping wherever needed, particularly this year’s 4-H Fair. Favorite 4-H projects? Floriculture and Swine, both which she showed for 10 years. Favorite Fair food? “The elephant ear.” Favorite Fair event? “The pig show.” During the Fair, she’s leading the free Kids’ Craft Activities: Pinecone Bird Feeder at 2 p.m. today, Pencil Pinwheel at 1 p.m. Friday and Apple Prints at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Outdoor Stage; and Insects Made My Ice Cream Sundae at 3 p.m. Sunday northwest of the Exhibition Center.
