Hamilton County Health Department Invests In EKG Simulator
New Device to Aid First Responders in Medical Training & Education
The Hamilton County Health Department has purchased and deployed a new EKG simulator designed to train fire and emergency medical teams throughout Hamilton County. The state-of-the-art device replicates the functionality of an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine, providing fire and EMS professionals with a realistic platform to practice interpreting and analyzing EKG readings.
“This device will help first responders improve their diagnostic skills and decision-making abilities,” says Christian Walker, the Health Department’s public health preparedness coordinator. “By mimicking the various cardiac rhythms and abnormalities that medical professionals encounter in the field in a safe and controlled environment, it can improve health outcomes.”
The simulator guides users through different scenarios and analyzes their performance, providing detailed feedback and performance metrics. “It allows us to identify areas for improvement and track our progress over time,” says Fire Chief Lance Overholser from the Cicero Fire Department. “The machine provides us a safe and realistic environment to refine our interpretation skills and should ultimately lead to more accurate diagnoses and improved patient care.”
The lightweight, portable machine cost over $9,000.00 and was funded through a public health preparedness grant. It will be housed at the Cicero Fire Department but shared by all eight of Hamilton County’s fire departments. “Training devices like these help us provide the best patient care we can,” Chief Overholser adds. “And in sharing it, you know you’ll get the same quality care no matter where you live in Hamilton County.”
