Dr. Derek Arrowood Shares Update

Several Hamilton Heights student-athletes recently partnered with the Hamilton North Public Library as part of All-Star Reads, a statewide initiative celebrating childhood literacy in honor of the 2025 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game. Selected as one of 100 Indiana sites, the library received a curated set of books spotlighting girls and women in athletics. Several Hamilton Heights student athletes participated by helping to bring these stories to life through special read-aloud sessions—offering young readers a powerful link between literacy and leadership. This meaningful collaboration reflects Heights’ commitment to fostering role models both on and off the field.

Over the summer, our transportation department completed its bus routes to best optimize service, ride time, and efficiency based on bus capacities, stop locations, and the number of students at each stop. Our drivers will be contacting parents of bus riders the last week of July to ensure an accurate count of riders, pick up and drop of points, and approximate times for their riders to help us better serve the families in our district. Any requests received after today (July 23) may not result in a bus on the first day of school. If you don’t hear from a driver and believe you signed up for a bus, please reach out to the Transportation Department at transportation@hhschuskies.org, 317-984-8404 or email Jayme Speer directly at jspeer@hhschuskies.org.

The community is invited to attend the 12th annual Prayer Breakfast on Friday, August 1 at the Middle School Café beginning at 7 a.m. A light breakfast will be served with the program beginning at 7:30 a.m. Music will be provided by the Cicero United Family Wesleyan Church with Pastor Allen Gross. This year’s speaker is Aaron Mingo, Head Football Coach at Taylor University. Kindly bring Capri Sun pouches, Pasta-Roni, and/or individual juice bottles (10 oz.) to donate to the Hamilton Heights’ Backpack program to help our families in need. The event is hosted by the Heights Area Pastors in conjunction with HHSC.

As a reminder, the Hamilton County Health Department will be hosting a back-to-school vaccination clinic at Hamilton Heights Middle School (students K-12) next Wednesday (July 30) from 1 – 6 p.m. as part of the Husky Connect Day.

You’re invited to join HOPE Family Care Center for a beautiful 5K Run/Walk through Hamilton Heights’ Cross Country course in Arcadia on Saturday, September 13. Proceeds support HOPE’s mission to provide free medical, dental, and counseling services for families across our region. More information can be found here.

Our 2025-26 and 2026-2027 academic year calendars are posted on our website. The upcoming school year will include 180 days in session, including three asynchronous e-learning days (i.e., self-paced virtual learning that can occur at different times and in different places that are particular to each student), one synchronous e-learning day (i.e., instruction delivered live and in real time to a student by the student’s teacher), four flex days, and early dismissal on Wednesdays.

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, I’m filled with pride and gratitude for the work underway this summer—each effort shaping a brighter future for Hamilton Heights students. Thank you for being such vital partners in your child’s education and an important part of the heartbeat of our schools. We look forward to welcoming everyone back—refreshed, energized, and ready for another great year of learning and growth on Tuesday, August 5. #WeAreHuskies
