NFD Lieutenant Completes Fire Investigation Safety Officer Course
Lt. Dan Milligan recently completed the Fire Investigation Safety Officer course, held in Apple Valley, Minnesota, from July 8–11. This intensive, four-day, competency-tested program focuses on managing safety at large or complex post-fire scenes. The knowledge and skills gained are applicable to any fire investigation, regardless of size or complexity.
The course provided the latest information on post-fire safety and best practices, equipping Lt. Milligan to serve as a designated safety officer during investigations involving significant hazards and risks.
Course topics included:
- Safety protocols before, during, and after investigations
- Hazard identification and risk assessment
- Health hazards associated with post-fire environments
- Building construction and its impact on scene safety
- Risk reduction procedures
- Legal considerations and documentation
- Post-incident responsibilities
Lt. Milligan is a 21-year veteran of the Noblesville Fire Department and currently serves as lieutenant at Station 75 on C-Crew. In addition to his leadership role, he has been actively involved in fire investigations for the past seven years. He holds a Fire Investigator Technician (FIT) certification through the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), along with his State of Indiana Fire Investigator certification.
