A blocked field goal by Daniel Rhoad capped a tense final 36 seconds for Guerin Catholic, which upset third-ranked West Lafayette 20-18 Friday night in the opening round of Class 3A, Sectional 28.
Brayden Hall’s 9-yard touchdown run and Addison Lushin’s extra point kick gave the Eagles an eight-point lead with 1:20 remaining.
West Lafayette, which finishes 8-2, needed 44 seconds to pull within two points on Colin Martin’s second TD pass of the night to Corey Adams. When the Red Devils’ two-point conversion pass attempt failed, it seemed Guerin would avenge last season’s sectional semifinal loss.
However, West Lafayette recovered the on-side kick and a quick pass play set up a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal. Rhoad, whose 57-yard touchdown run earlier in the fourth quarter gave Guerin the lead for good, deflected the kick.
Jagger Albert’s 12-yard touchdown run put Guerin on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Albert led all rushers with 111 yards on 22 carries, while Rhoad nearly averaged 10 yards a carry with 108 yards on 11 attempts.
Guerin (4-4) will get a chance to play giant-killer for the second successive Friday when it faces top-ranked Chatard (8-1), the reigning 3A state champions.

DeVaney threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Collin McNair before halftime. Gavin Reners’ 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter wrapped up the Blackhawks’ scoring.
Peyton Cross rushed for 51 yards and DeVaney gained 47 as part of a 360-yard rushing night for Sheridan. Tindley, which finishes 3-6, was held to 108 total yards – 11 net rushing yards.
